INTUITIVE PORTRAITS AND LANDSCAPES

LINEAR PORTRAITS
A different take on my vector style, these portraits and landscapes are drawn freehand in Photoshop using layer blending modes to simulate the effect of transparent watercolor. The idea is to enhance the emotional impact of my work using more intuitive color choices and a spontaneous gestural approach to painting. The variety of blending modes creates unusual colors that are manipulated with successive transparent color layers.

PAUL NEWMAN Portrait
Fairly happy with this one. I never know where the color palette is going to take me.
RUSSELL CROWE Portrait
A young Russell Crowe. He is an easy subject for a portrait because of his distinctive features.
CLINT EASTWOOD Portrait
Clint makes craggy look good. The older he gets the more fearsome his face gets.
MORGAN FREEMAN Portrait
Experimenting with a different color palette on this one. Purple and blue with a slash of lemon yellow. The yellow was created by tinting one color over another.
ROBERT DOWNEY Jr Painting
Pushing colors and staying loose. I use layer blend modes to create the equivalent of transparent watercolor like layers only with flat color.
Freehand Linear Paintings
The idea occurred to me this week to loosen up my vector style by switching from the pen tool in illustrator to the lasso tool in Photoshop. I wanted the random quality that comes from brushwork in a flat color style. The Matterhorn rendering is based on a photo. The colors are intuitive.
PETER SELLERS Portrait
It seemed appropriate to do Peter Sellers in a style that makes it look like he has paint splattered over his face. The painted face of a clown. He is a classic.
ALAN RICKMAN "Severus Snape" Portrait
The Harry Potter series was perfectly timed with my daughters as they were growing up, so Severus Snape is a favorite character of mine.
ROBERT REDFORD PORTRAIT
A fairly loose linear painting of Redford just completed in Photoshop.
